9 Ways Authors Choose Their Characters’ Names

Posted on January 25, 2023January 27, 2023 by Debbie Young

As I was planning my current work-in-progress, Beastly Business at St Bride’s, the fourth Gemma Lamb Cozy Mystery, I realised I’d have to choose the names for three new characters – a task I always enjoy. Continue reading “9 Ways Authors Choose Their Characters’ Names” →

Still drawing inspiration from my writers' retreat in Marazion, Cornwall last week. This was the view from our garden. Truly magical. As part of my research for a new book, I visited the inspiring PK Porthcurno Telecommunications Museum, near Lands End, earlier this week. It feels almost at the back of beyond, but don't be fooled - it's a hugely important and historic hub of underwater telecommunications cables reaching all around the world. A fascinating day out even if you have no interest in the technology, because it provides an impressive example of man's ingenuity and determination, as well as an interesting slice of social history, just a stone's throw from a stunning, secluded beach and the Minack Theatre. Today's the day! Celebrating the launch of my all-new eighth Sophie Sayers novel, "Murder in the Highlands", on a Cornish writing retreat - and making notes for Sophie Sayers #9! The blue skies and gentle breeze today around Mount's Bay make it all the more important to remember the fishermen who risk their lives at sea in all weathers - and sometimes lose them. The commemorative statue in the second picture is just behind the Newlyn Art Gallery and is visible from comfort of the museum's garden cafe. I've never been to this gallery before despite spending quite a few holidays in and around Mousehole and am very glad I came. The exhibition by local artists of the impact of the sea on their lives, expressed in highly original and personal ways, is very inspiring and helpful as research for my next book, which I'm hoping to plan this week. In Marazion, you don't have to miss out on the spectacular view of St Michael's Mount just because you are waiting for a bus. Musical gates at Marazion war memorial bearing the opening lines of All Saints' Church's former curate Henry Francis Lyte's lyrics of the timeless hymn "Abide With Me". Have often sung the alto line in our parish church in Hawkesbury. Very appropriate and very moving. Walking the causeway to St Michael's Mount yesterday afternoon felt like following the Yellow Brick Road to Oz. We made it back just before the tide covered it up again. My home for a week's writing retreat, with six writer friends - and our view from the garden across to St Michael's Mount. For the week of the launch of my new novel, the eighth Sophie Sayers mystery. "Murder in the Highlands", set in Scotland, I'll be at the most distant end of England, just a few miles from Lands End in Cornwall, on a writing retreat with six author friends, a break planned long before the launch date was set. I'll share some pictures as we go out and about this week, in between starting to plan Sophie Sayers #9!
