Swish, Swish!

Posted on February 1, 2023February 16, 2023 by Debbie Young

After volunteering to help man the Swishing rail at a village event run by our local Women’s Institute (WI) later this month, it occurs to me that perhaps I ought to find out exactly what I am letting myself in for. I know that in this context swishing means swapping clothes, but I’m intrigued by the derivation of the term.

Meanwhile, indoors after dark, I can't stop knitting! This pattern is called Cornish Lace and I'm using odds and ends of yarn wound together in rainbow order. Last night I knitted the yellow stripe while listening to the first chapter of an audiobook of Charles Dickens' " The Old Curiosity Shop" and decided this would be the perfect late night activity for winding down before bed. Today Dorothy and I will be relaxing in the sunshine. She is an excellent role model for how to take time out to recharge. "Nothing makes me as productive as the last minute," says a sign above my desk - and, as ever, I am finalising the proofs of my next book at my desk at the very last minute, when most people will be unwinding for the bank holiday weekend. The colours of a Cotswold spring. Snapped in our village recreation ground just now. A fresh breeze and a surprisingly hot sun. Now to the village shop for an ice-cream! What fun it was at the Summer Party of the multi-award-winning publisher Boldwood Books last night, with whom I've just signed an additional four-book contract, as my first 13-book deal nears completion. Under the inspired and charismatic leadership of Amanda Ridout, Boldwood is changing the face of publishing with innovative and inclusive business practices that make all their authors and suppliers proud and pleased to be associated with them. I'm so thrilled that Rachel Lawston, who has been designing my book covers since 2017, when I self-published my first novel, and who now hand-draws the covers for my Gemma Lamb Cozy Mystery series published by Boldwood Books, is also now a successful author herself, with her delightful series of children's nature books, such as "Mia Makes a Meadow" - an appropriate book to share here in #NoMowMay! All Rachel's books are published by Pikku Books, and there'll be a new one out in October, "My Nature Trail", co-written with her husband Paul Lawston. May is my favourite month, and not only do we have perfect English spring weather today, but according to the forecast, it's here to stay for at least a week. So lucky to live in an old Cotswold cottage with a traditional, rambling garden. And then there were four! I don't know how it happens, but every time I go away, even for a couple of days, I come home with more books, this one a fitting souvenir of my mini-break this week in Aberystwyth
